Council Tax Support

Council Tax Support

The current Council Tax Support scheme has now been in place since 2013/14, replacing the former national scheme known as Council Tax Benefit. Here you will find valuable information about the scheme.

The scheme was introduced following a full public consultation exercise and in order to address the 10% reduction in national Government funding. A number of measures were put in place to reduce the level of cost incurred under the previous Council Tax Benefit scheme and these measures are explained further within the enclosed consultation document.

Under these new arrangements Sedgemoor District Council, rather than the Government, now decides what help is provided to working-age people on a low income for the payment of their council tax.

Pension age Council Tax Benefit / Support recipients are protected from any changes by national rules which are broadly aligned to those under Council Tax Benefit.

Every year Sedgemoor District Council is required to set a Council Tax Support scheme for the year ahead. Given that the scheme was introduced in 2013 it is appropriate to consider the overall level of funding, the changes currently applied and potential further options which may be used to reduce the cost of the scheme.

Even if people don't claim Council Tax Support, it is important that people have their say as the scheme is paid for by all council tax payers in Sedgemoor.

The forms are available here at the Council offices or it can be completed online at www.sedgemoor.gov/counciltaxsupport
