People's March for Europe

People's March for Europe

On the 9th of September 2017 Diversity Voice were among 50,000 people who marched through the streets of London to Parliament Square, all united to challenge the British public to rethink the decision to leave the EU.

We were invited by Roger Casale, CEO of New Europeans, a civil rights organisation which champions freedom of movement, non-discrimination and the principle of solidarity in Europe.

We were overwhelmed by the scale of the event and the number of people it attracted. It felt good to march with other people who shared the same idea and wanted to have their voices heard.

The idea behind the march was not telling people in the UK who voted leave what to do or not to do. It was an invitation for everybody to think again as last year's leave campaign was misleading to say the least and the public was not aware of the dire consequenes leaving the EU can bring.

We were delighted to have a speaker’s slot on the stage where we had an opportunity to share our experience as Europeans living and helping others in Somerset with a wider public. The speakers included various Members of Parliament and Members of European Parliament be it Conservatives, Labour, Lib Dem, Greens or Plaid Cymru (Welsh National Party), Duty Chaplain at Westminster Abbey and the headline speech was given right at the end by Sir Bob Geldof. Mastering of Ceremonies was done by Graham Hughes, an adventurer, tv presenter and writer from Liverpool.
